2010/01/29

On January 28, 2010, Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi met with UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on the sidelines of the international conference on Afghanistan in London.

Yang once again expressed condolences for the UN staff who lost their lives in the earthquake in Haiti and extended profound sympathy to the families of the victims. Yang also thanked the UN secretary-general for sending a message of condolences over the death of eight Chinese police officers in the tragic earthquake. China will continue to support UN peacekeeping missions and is ready to work with the international community to assist Haiti’s efforts to conquer the disaster and rebuild their homeland.

Yang said China has cooperated closely with the United Nations on a range of major global and regional issues during the past year. In the new year, China will continue to participate in various UN missions with a responsible and constructive attitude and will earnestly fulfill its responsibilities and obligations to continue playing a positive role for world peace and stability. China supports the UN high-level meeting on the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) to be held in September.

Ban said that the Chinese government and people have provided powerful support and generous assistance to the quake relief efforts in Haiti, and he was impressed by Chinese rescue workers' bravery and devotion.

Ban said China has played an important role in addressing major global and regional issues including the UN Millennium Development Goals, climate change, the nuclear issue on the Korean Peninsula, and reconstruction in Afghanistan, noting that China has also made positive contributions to the success of the UN climate change conference in Copenhagen. The United Nations hopes to step up cooperation and strengthen coordination with China in the new year, he added.
